Mr Chai Hon Yam

Engineering Specialist
Mr.
Chai Hon Yam commenced
his career in aviation when he was recruited in 1948 by Malayan
Airways. He was
trained as a qualified aircraft
engineer. Initially, he was assigned the responsibilities to the
component
overhaul and maintenance of aircrafts ranging from the Douglas DC3 and
Fokker F-27
to Boeing 707 and 737
In 1963, in the
Malaysian Airlines, as a Senior Technical Services Engineer, he
evaluated
aircraft and component manufacturers" service and modification
bulletins
for operating performance improvements, analysed aircraft system
operating
defects and recommended corrective and preventive measures. He oversaw the monitoring
and the recording
the operating performance of aircrafts during flight test for their
required annual
airworthiness certificate renewal.
Moreover, he oversaw
the strategic expansions of MSA in 1970 with the acquisition of more
Boeing 707
aircrafts to augment the existing fleet.
He was responsible for the technical
specifications of new technology
jumbo aircrafts; procured a comprehensive range of airframe, electronic
and
cabin furnishing accessories.
He supervised the
co-ordination of resident quality control engineering inspectors
throughout the
aircraft production process, technical acceptance, legal transfer of
titles as
well as the delivery of new aircrafts from the aircraft manufacturers.
Mr Chai Hon Yam was with SIA when MSA was separated into MAS and SIA in
1970. He retired
from his outstanding and
illustrious career in 1985.
